Cinema Erotica presents The Handmaiden - Park Chan-wook’s acclaimed 2016 film exploring desire, deception, power, and female autonomy.
Set in Korea during the 1930s, the film follows Sook-hee, a young woman hired as a handmaiden to Lady Hideko, a wealthy Japanese heiress living in an isolated estate with her controlling uncle. But Sook-hee has arrived under false pretences - she is secretly part of an elaborate plan to seduce Hideko, steal her inheritance, and have her committed.
As the two women become increasingly intimate, the boundaries between seduction and genuine desire begin to shift, complicating a scheme in which almost everyone has something to hide.
Inspired by Sarah Waters’ novel Fingersmith, The Handmaiden moves through changing perspectives, revealing new layers of betrayal, sexuality, manipulation, and liberation as the story unfolds.
At its heart is the relationship between two women attempting to reclaim control over their own bodies and futures in a world shaped by male power and expectation.
Beautifully crafted, erotic, and psychologically complex, The Handmaiden is a story best experienced without knowing exactly where it will take you.
Join us for pre-drinks from 7 pm at Rocket Society, then head to FOMO Cinemas for an 8:30 pm screening.
